Official says Gov. Martz lied on forests

MAY 23, 2001

Montana state Auditor John Morrison on Monday said Governor Judi Martz made false statements to President Bush about a controversial set of rules limiting road building and logging on national forest lands.

Morrison, a Democrat, said Martz, a Republican, made false statements when she said implementation of the US Forest Service policy would lock up state-owned lands. Morrison says just 1,320 acres would be affected.

Martz defended her statements, which she wrote to Bush on May 4.

Martz has been trying to intervene in an Idaho lawsuit challenging the rules. She is doing so over the objections of the state's Attorney General, who is also a Democrat.
