GOPs urge Bush to keep logging rules

MAY 2, 2001 Twenty GOP members of the House of Representatives joined Democrats and environmentalists on Tuesday in urging President Bush not to scrap the roadless forest initiative finalized by the Clinton administration. The rules were finalized in January. Republicans, Western Governors, and at least one tribe in Idaho oppose them. They limit road building on roadless areas on nearly 60 million acres of federal forest land. The rules are the subject of lawsuits filed by a number of states, private industry, and the Kootenai Tribe. Get the Story:
