MAY 18, 2000 Santa Clara Pueblo Governor Denny Gutierrez says the Pueblo is being overlooked, despite suffering significant damage to archaeological, sacred, hunting, and fishing grounds on their northern New Mexico reservation. The Cerro Grande fire has burned 7,000 acres, 15% of the tribe's land, and almost one-third of their watershed. Gutierrez said the tribe will need money to help with erosion control, reseeding and replanting of trees, and other renewal efforts, but that he can't put a price tag on damage to land important to the tribe's cultural and subsistence livelihood.
