MAY 17, 2000 The Yakama Indian Nation's plans to burn 600 acres over the next few weeks have been put on hold due to a 30-day suspension on prescribed burns issued by President Clinton. A BIA representative worries that the suspension could lead to even greater fires later in the summer. A prescribed burn set on May 4 in the Bandelier National Monument, a historic Pueblo site, has caused serious damage to the Northern New Mexico region surrounding the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Sacred sites on Santa Clara Pueblo land were damaged. The fire also forced the evacuation of nearby towns. Get the Story:
