On a visit to the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, Department of Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham on Thursday defended cuts to cleanup funds proposed in the fiscal year 2002 budget.

Abraham said cleanup cuts are necessary because the programs aren't being managed properly.

The proposed budget cuts all funds to cleanup land that is to be returned to San Ildefonson Pueblo after the federal government took it to use for the Laboratory, the birthplace of the atomic bomb. Two counties that will also receive land.
