Although not yet approved by Congress, the Department of Interior is expecting to gain revenues from oil and gas development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska.

The revenue is included in the Interior's fiscal year 2002 budget proposal. Also included are oil revenues from the National Petroleum Reserve.

When asked by a reporter about the ANWR revenues, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Monday defended the administration's expectation despite widespread Congressional opposition to drilling.
