Norton to allow monument changes

While she won't outright repeal President Clinton's national monument designations, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Thursday said she would consider changing certain land protections if communities affected want them.

Norton said she would work with local property owners and other officials to make sure pre-existing uses of the lands will be allowed. Mining, grazing, and road uses are among the uses she might be considering.
