State worried about nuclear shipments

MARCH 20, 2001 A spokesman for Alaska Governor Tony Knowles on Monday said the state hopes talks about shipping nuclear waste through the Arctic can be squashed as soon as possible. Knowles had written a letter to Secretary of State Colin Powell questioning media reports which suggested Russian shippers planned to escort nuclear material to Japan for use by power companies there. The nuclear material would travel on Russia's Arctic coast and Knowles feared a potential spill would damage the environment. Powell wrote back saying such talks were far off in the future.
