'Racist' drilling billboards scrapped

MARCH 19, 2001 Arctic Power has removed a series of billboards from the streets of Anchorage, Alaska, due to complaints, including one accusing the pro-Arctic drilling group of racism. One of billboards depicted an Arab man as cross-eyed, big-nosed, and wearing a turban. But some said it was racist and insensitive, especially since Middle Eastern athletes would be in town for the World Winter Games. Arctic Power said the signs were getting unwanted attention and pulled them a week after putting them up. Get the Story:
