FEBRUARY 6, 2001

A coalition funded by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation on Monday said southeastern Connecticut will not play host to a United Nations children's environmental conference in 2002.

But Joanne Tawfilis, who coordinated the effort to get the conference to Connecticut, said the area will play host to a similar conference in 2003. The New England Coalition for Justice and Community Understanding, funded by the tribe, and the International Education Resource Network of New York sought to have the UN host the conference in the area and the tribe planned to hold a powwow for the 1,000 children expected to attend.
