Norton won't overturn monuments

FEBRUARY 21, 2001 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Tuesday said no national monuments designated by former President Bill Clinton will be overturned. But the Bush administration hasn't yet made a final decision on the matter. Still, the fact that Norton, who oversees the National Park Service, has said they won't be overturned will disappoint Republicans and Western lawmakers. Hinting at budget cuts, Norton also said there wasn't enough money to implement management plans for all of the new monuments. Get the Story:
