Costs of Ute water project criticized

FEBRUARY 14, 2001 A group called Taxpayers for the Animas River says $600,000 in taxpayer funds were spent last year just to get the controversial $450 million Animas-La Plata dam project approved by Congress. The project, first authorized in 1968, has been criticized as unneeded waste and destructive to the environment. Over the years, it has changed in scope and size and now incorporates a settlement of the water rights of Ute tribes in the state. But foes of the project say Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo) changed it so much that it benefits non-Indians more than the tribes. Get the Story:
