Part of beluga decision delayed

DECEMBER 7, 2000

Some Alaska Native Villages and the National Marine Fisheries Service on Wednesday agreed to delay what could be a key issue in determining who can harvest beluga whales.

Proposed regulations will limit Native hunting to two whales every year for the next 25 years. But exactly which villages will get to harvest those whales is still under debate as several groups hunt the whale for subistence and cultural reasons.
