The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday refused to stop the cleanup of the Silver Valley in Idaho despite the requests of three mining companies.

The companies wanted the EPA to suspend cleanup pending a trial against them. The trial is the result of a lawsuit filed by the the Coeur d'Alene Tribe in 1991, which the Department of Justice joined in 1996.

The tribe has been seeking cleanup of the Coeur d'Alene River Basin for years. Mining began in the late 1800s.
