The eruption of Popocatepetl on Tuesday emphasizes the cultural beliefs Nahua Indians in Mexico have of the volcano.

Popocatepetl and the dormant Iztaccihuatl are often considered lovers in Azctec folklore. Residents of one village made a pilgrimage every March to Popocatepetl until their spiritual elder died.
