JANUARY 18, 2001 President Bill Clinton on Wednesday announced the declaration of seven new national monuments, including one considered sacred by Cochiti Pueblo of New Mexico and two others with ties to the tribes and Lewis and Clark in Montana. The designations affect more than 1 million acres of land in the West. They include: Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks in New Mexico, Upper Missouri River Breaks and Pompeys Pillar in Montana, Carrizo Plain in California, Sonoran Desert in Arizona, and Minidoka in Idaho. Clinton yesterday also promoted explorer William Clark from Army lieutenant to captain, the same level as his companion Meriwether Lewis. He also gave the title of Honorary Sergeant to Sacajawea, the Indian woman who helped the pair in their journey of the West. Get the Story:
