NOVEMBER 29, 2000

A trial for a lawsuit filed by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of South Dakota against the Army Corps of Engineers was postponed on Tuesday because the parties might reach a settlement.

The tribe filed the lawsuit to protect graves being exposed at Lake Oahe. The Army Corps was supposed to move the graves to another location during dam construction along the Missouri River in the 1950s, but remains have been resurfacing recently.

The tribe has sought to prevent the Corps from releasing water on the river. A temporary order was issued against the Corps earlier this month.

The two sides are talking about resolving the issue. Meanwhile, the trial has been postponed to January 22, 2001.

The Yankton Sioux Tribe has been in a similar situation with the Corps as well.
