The Lincoln Indian Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, played host on Wednesday to two speakers opposed to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

John Hansen, president of the Nebraska Farmers Union, said the nation should be looking at alternative energy sources instead of trying to tap the oil and gas said to be found in ANWR's coastal plain. He said corn-based ethanol should be considered.

Sandra Newman opposes drilling but for different reasons. A member of Canada's Vutnut Gwitchin First Nation, her people rely on a caribou herd in ANWR for subsistence and cultural purposes.

There are about 10,000 Gwich'in living in Alaska and Canada.

The Senate on Tuesday voted unanimously not to consider a controversial amendment to a $345 billion spending bill that would open ANWR up to oil and gas exploration.
