Maine tribes want Supreme Court review

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2001

The Penobscot and Passamaquoddy tribes of Maine are asking the Supreme Court to protect tribal correspondence sought by private paper companies.

A state court has ruled Maine's freedom of information act applies to certain types of tribal documents. Because the papers in question affect water regulation, the court said they were public.

The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals has since rejected the tribes' attempts to keep the documents private.
