White Earth state in land flap

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2001

A dispute between the White Earth Ojibwe and the state of Wisconsin has apparently caused mass confusion among hunters, fishers and non-Indians.

The state on Friday sent out a news release saying the tribe was closing off its reservation to non-Indian activities. But the state did not point out that only 8 percent of the reservation is tribally owned.

So the tribal council on Monday had to issue a follow-up, noting the ownership issue. Additionally, said Gary Padrta, public relations coordinator for White Earth, said the tribe probably wouldn't close any lands because it was too late in the season.

The state's news release came after talks between Department of Natural Resources and the tribe fell apart. The state won't recognize the tribe's hunting and fishing tags as legal.
