Mohegan Tribe has competition

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2001

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut last week finally started its long delayed fishery and already has competition.

A local businessman wants to use the same shellfish beds around an island that the tribe is seeking. John M. Ragsdale and the tribe each have asked permission to use the beds on Mystic Island.

The tribe has already started planting 30 million baby clams in leased areas of federal waters. The effort is a scaled-down version of a plan that has drawn significant local opposition.
