OCTOBER 23, 2000 According to two professors at South Dakota State University, every acre of the Black Hills has been cut at least once during the past 125 years. The first managed timber sale occurred in 1899 in the Black Hills National Forest. Additionally, the Black Hills have been mined, grazed, settled, and visited by countless tourists. The US Forest Service wants to recreate the forest like it was when Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer first camped there in 1874. Get the Story:
