A northern New Mexico County has approved regulations affecting cell phone towers after local residents and Jemez Pueblo raised concerns about environmental and cultural impacts of development.

Companies must pay a $2,000 fee to have their applications for cell towers be reviewed by San Miguel county commissioners. The policy goes into effect in 60 days.

Jemez Pueblo and others became worried about a cell tower located near the Pecos National Historical Park. The tower doesn't disturb sacred sites, the tribe said, but appears to limit access to the park, where an ancestral Pueblo village is located.
