WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 2002 A 17-acre Lenape burial site has been declared an emergency historic site by the the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The temporary designation protects the land from development and puts the site up for review by a state panel. The township of Vernon approved a $1.3 million contract to construct two football fields near the site just hours before Monday's emergency order. Archaeologists say the site was inhabited for 10,000 years before the Lenape were removed to points West. Get the Story:
