Tribes claim disputed shields

MONDAY, APRIL 1, 2002 The National Park Service last December announced its intent to repatriate the oldest leather shields discovered in North America to the Navajo Nation. Since then, several tribes have objected. Ute tribes from Utah and Colorado and the Kaibab Paiute Tribe of Arizona have claimed the shields, which date to between the years 1420 and 1640. The shields were discovered in Utah in 1926. After some observation, Navajo elders who visited Capitol Reef National Park concluded the items belonged to them. Get the Story:
