Sundogs spotted in Alaska

THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 2002

Alaskans in Fairbanks gazed with awe at the sky Wednesday morning as "sundogs" surrounded the sun, signaling more cold weather in Alaska Native tradition.

Better known as parhelion, the phenomenon is not rare. But since there were extra dogs, it drew added attention.

The sundogs are also known as mittens in Native culture.
