Congress passes education reform bill

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2001 The Senate on Tuesday approved an education reform bill, clearing the way for its signature by President Bush. The Senate voted 87 to 10 to pass the bill. The package ties nationwide school performance to federal funds, with those who don't do well on standardized tests at risk of losing their money. A specific provision offered by Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) expands Alaska Native efforts. Teacher education programs for Native students, programs to improve Native performance on standardized tests and federal funds to develop regional vocational schools are included.
