Tribal court wants control over school

The authority of the tribal court on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana is being challenged by a local school district over a dispute involving a teenage student being kicked off the basketball team.

The Wolf Point School District has asked a federal court to prevent the Fort Peck tribal court from taking action on the issue. The district says it can't be controlled by the court.

A sophomore at Wolf Point High School, however, thinks otherwise. After receiving a failing grade in French that resulted in his ineligibility to play basketball, he had the tribal court issue an order directing the school to allow him to play.

A trial to hear the federal case is scheduled for January 3.
