TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2001

Although a federal judge has ordered an eagle-feather headdress be transferred to the Department of Interior, the battle over the repatriation of the historic item is just beginning.

The Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico has claimed the headdress, saying it was worn by Geronimo, who was Apache. The Comanche Tribe of Oklahoma says even if Geronimo wore it, it was made by a Comanche and should be returned to them.

Now that the Interior will take possession of it, other tribes might claim it as well.
