Effort on to keep Yavapai language alive
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2001

The Fort McDowell Apache Nation of Arizona is taking steps to preserve the Yavapai language, spoken fluently by only about 40 out of the tribe's 900 members.

Tribal members are developing a dictionary, coming up with an alphabet, deciding on new words and preserving stories. Students at the 'Hmañ 'shaw Elementary School learn some Yavapai during classwork.

The tribe also offers a class for adults.
