Indian students to count more

SEPTEMBER 26, 2000

The education of Indian students was the focus of the Nebraska Native American Summit held at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln on Monday.

The state's Education Commissioner Doug Christensen introduced a plan to improve schools on its four reservations. The plan calls for at least $6 million in increased funding through the state aid formula, under which Indian students are to be counted as 2.25 students.

The current formula counts Indian students as 1.25 students. The count is intended to keep funding levels for Indian students as high as feasibly possible.

Ever since Governor Mike Johanns vetoed additional funding for reservation schools, tribal and education leaders have tried to find ways to get more money to students on the Omaha, Winnebago, Santee Sioux, and Ponca reservations.
