SEPTEMBER 25, 2000

The remains of a Wampanoag were found during the installation of a septic tank at a home in the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts.

The state's unmarked burial law provides protection for remains. Remains of Native Americans are returned to the Indian Affairs Commission, who then begins repatriation to local tribes.

The Wampanoag are a state-recognized tribe.
