SEPTEMBER 20, 2000 On Monday, about three dozen Abenaki of Vermont blocked the entrance to a road in Highgate, where Abenaki graves have been found. So far about 27 bodies have been uncovered alongside the road, where construction of two new homes might threaten more burials. The tribe wants a moratorium on building permits. Intentional removal or excavation of remains in Vermont is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Abenaki remains have been found at various sites and the state has purchased those lands in order to protect them. Get the Story:
