Ishi's brain to be repatriate

AUGUST 8, 2000 The brain of Ishi, the so-called "Last of the Yahi" will finally be repatriated to some of his tribal relatives in California. A private cermony will take place today at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. Representatives from the Yana Tribe, who live on the Pit River and Redding Reservations in California, will be on hand to take Ishi back home for burial. Ishi died in 1916 but his brain was sent to the Smithsonian despite his wishes that he be cremated. Get the Story:
