A group of about 50 runners are making a 650-mile trek in honor of the victims of the Sand Creek Massacre in Colorado.

The runners began at the massacre site on Sunday and are expected to arrive in Arapahoe, Wyoming on Saturday. Descendants of the Cheyenne and Arapaho massacred are taking part in the event.

On November 29, 1864, volunteer United States soldiers slaughtered Cheyenne and Arapaho men, women, and children who were flying the flag of peace. Col. John M. Chivington led the November 29 attack, which was condemmed by Congress.

Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo) has introduced a new bill that would designate 12,480 acres in Colorado a national historic site in order to commemorate the massacre.
