Consultation may hold up Haskell highway

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2001 A lawyer for the Kansas Department of Transportation says consultation with tribes on a proposed highway near Haskell University might delay the project. Since the proposed highway would affect national historic sites, tribes must be consulted under federal law, said Mike Rees. Haskell officials have already balked at plans which would place the highway close to sacred wetlands where former students are believed to be buried. The state is now proposing to change the plan and wants the school to sign off on an alternative. Get the Story:
