AUGUST 28, 2000

Only 10 pecent of an estimated 200,000 Indian remains still held by institutions across the country have been repatriated.

Tribal leaders for years have been complaining of the slow-moving process first mandated by the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) of 1990. The government, particularly the National Parks Service and the Department of Interior have been criticized for not repatriating remains and items in a timely manner.
