AUGUST 28, 2000 John Brown, historic preservation officer of the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island, is questioning an archaeological dig which turned up no artifacts. Cultural Resource Specialists of New England, a Rhode Island firm, conducted a a dig at a site in Cranston, where an office park and shopping center are planned. The firm turned up no evidence of significant artifacts. But Brown and the tribe say it's a historic Narragansett village and have alerted the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission, as well as the regional office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They are going to ask that members of the tribe be hired to monitor the construction. The land falls under federal and state jursidictions because it contains wetlands and requires special permits.
