MONDAY, AUGUST 27, 2001 Author Jerome Greene is on a book tour to promote "Nez Perce Summer 1877," an account detailing the flight Nez Perce tribal members made across the Plains to Canada. Chief Joseph and other leaders took a group of about 800 non-treaty Nez Perce on a 1,700-mile journey through Montana. The non-treaty members had been protesting being forced onto a reservation in Idaho that was much smaller than the one promised to them in an 1855 treaty. More than 200 Nez Perce died on the trip. The Army eventually caught up to the group 40 miles south of the Canadian border. Get the Story:
