FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 2001

Eight New Mexico Pueblos and the Hopi Tribe of Arizona are commemorating the Pueblo Revolt, which began today in 1680.

The Pueblo Revolt succeeded in driving the Spanish out of New Mexico for 16 years. It was led by Popé, or Po'pay, of San Juan Pueblo and involved a large coordination among Pueblos in New Mexico and the Hopi Tribe, all of whom speak different languages.

A delegation of relay runners left Taos Pueblo on Monday to re-enact the route made to Hopiland. The runners arrive at the Hopi Reservation today.

Pope will be representing New Mexico in the Statuary Hall in Washington, DC. Each state gets two statues.
