JULY 5, 2000

The Pueblo of Santo Domingo will receive full funding for its full-day kindergation school as part of the Kindergarten Literacy Readiness Program. The funding amounts to $3,791 per student for 77 students.

Preference for the program is given to schools with high populations of at-risk students and identified as needing improvement. Test scores at the Pueblo have improved after educators, parents, and tribal leaders have become more involved in students' education.

The school recently instituted the "Success for All" program and have seen improvement of the reading levels and standardized test scores.

Most children speak Keres exclusively at home and in daily life. The Pueblo forbids Keres to be taught in school.
