WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2001 During a speech to the National Indian School Board Association, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Tuesday gave a brief mention to Indianz.Com. In praising Neal McCaleb, Norton referred to a report Indianz.Com published about the the new Assistant Secretary last week. In the report, Indianz.Com recounted remarks made by Senator Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) about McCaleb's willingness to listen to tribal leaders. "In all my years of sitting on this committee, this is the first time to see an Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs sitting through testimony of tribal leaders," Inouye was reported as saying. Norton said McCaleb will continue to listen to tribal leaders and educators in ensuring the success of Indian students. The BIA Office of Indian Education Programs yesterday launched a new web site to document the progress being made to fix crumbling tribal schools. It is available at http://www.buildaschool.bia.edu. The three-day school board conference ends today in Portland, Oregon. Get Norton's Remarks:
