In yet another chapter in the controversy over the bones of 16 Midwestern and Plains tribes, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln says workers apparently dumped the incinerated remains in a landfill.

UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman wrote a letter to a Santee Sioux tribal member and said the remains were most likely dumped in a nearby landfill. The bones had been incinerated in the 1960s and school workers regularly took waste to the landfill, said Perlman.
