Norton, McCaleb to address Indian educators
MONDAY, JULY 23, 2001

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton and Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Neal McCaleb will address the National Indian School Board Association's summer conference in Portland, Oregon, this week.

Norton told Indianz.Com she believes her speech will be the first time an Interior Secretary has addressed the group. The conference will be McCaleb's first public speaking appearance since being sworn-in earlier this month, although he was the guest of a cable call-in show last week.

The conference brings together Indian educators from throughout the country, as well as federal and state education officials. The agenda includes a wide range of topics, from bilingual education to teaching standards to technology in classrooms.

The conference runs from Monday through Wednesday.

Norton last week visited the Tiospa Zina Tribal School on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation in South Dakota. It was her first trip to a tribal school.

The BIA oversees 185 schools and 50,000 students throughout the nation.
