Artifacts kill soccer field

JULY 19, 2000

The discovery of Snoqualmie artifacts in Fall City, Washington has killed a three-year plan to open a youth soccer field on the site.

Workers on the site recently discovered the artifacts as they were digging at the site. The site is a state registered archaeological site, which does not necessarily stop development.

Tribal and county officials are patrolling the site 24 hours. Vandals have already dug two holes at the site, looking for artifacts.

The Snoqualmie just received federal recognition in 1999. Other Snoqualmie sites have been looted and robbed in the past and due to their lack of federal recognition, the tribe had been unable to protect them adequately.
