The Tulalip Elementary School on the Tulalip Reservation in Washington has begun a new cultural heritage program that incorporates tribal culture and language into the classroom.

Students have gone on various field trips as part of the program, including a visit to an historic village. On Monday, they went on an orca sighting trip but weren't able to see the animals which play a part in tribal lore.

The trip was organized by a former member of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, who opposes the whale hunt of the Makah Nation.

About two-thirds of the elementary students are tribal members.
