Removing artifacts from the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area in Washington is punishable by fines up to thousands of dollars but that hasn't deterred artifact hunters from canvassing the lake.

The drought has caused water levels to drop, bringing in the hunters. So the Spokane Tribe, the Colville Confederated Tribes and the National Park Service are stepping up patrolling and efforts to educate people about stealing artifacts.

Two people caught stealing artifacts last year in the Spokane part of the lake have their case pending in federal court.
