MAY 18, 2001

The Department of Interior on Thursday filed its response to lawsuit filed by scientists seeking to study the remains of a 9,000-year-old Native man.

The government said a federal judge in Oregon should uphold the Interior's decision to repatriate Kennewick Man to five tribes in the Northwest. Last year, former Secretary Bruce Babbitt ruled that Kennewick Man was culturally affiliated to the Yakama, Umatilla, Nez Perce, Colville, and Wanapum tribes.

The tribes want to rebury him. He was discovered on Umatilla ceded land in 1996.
