A judge in Utah on Wednesday said the state's English-only law can be implemented while it is being appealed to Utah Supreme Court.

In denying an attempt to stop it, the judge said there was no proof that implementing the law was harmful. The law, which prohibits the use of English in some governmental activities, is largely symbolic, which its supporters admit.

Several state officials, including a county commissioner who uses Navajo to talk to his consituents, filed suit against the law. They lost the case but the Utah Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is appealing it.
