Commission to vote on mascots

APRIL 5, 2001

The United States Commission on Civil Rights is expected to vote next week on the use of American Indians as mascots, logos, and nicknames.

The issue is being raised by Elsie Meeks, an Oglala Lakota from South Dakota. She said drafted a proposal to condemn the names, but two other members objected to it.

The Commission has little power, but it can hold hearings and make recommendations. Last year, hearings on race relations were held in South Dakota and on the election in Florida.
